Why Small Businesses Are Targets
Many small business owners believe they are too small to be targeted by cybercriminals. This assumption is dangerous. In reality, small businesses are attractive targets precisely because they often have weaker security controls than larger organizations.
Attackers know that small businesses may have valuable data—customer information, financial records, intellectual property—but lack the dedicated IT security resources of larger companies.
Essential Security Measures
1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Every account should have a unique, complex password. Consider using a password manager to generate and store passwords securely. Never reuse passwords across multiple accounts.
2. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
MFA adds a second layer of security beyond passwords. Even if an attacker obtains a password, they cannot access the account without the second factor—typically a code from a mobile app or text message.
3. Keep Software Updated
Software updates often include security patches for newly discovered vulnerabilities. Enable automatic updates wherever possible, and do not ignore update notifications.
4. Train Your Employees
Human error is the leading cause of security breaches. Regular security awareness training helps employees recognize phishing attempts, social engineering, and other threats.
5. Back Up Your Data
Regular backups protect against ransomware and data loss. Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of your data, on two different types of media, with one copy stored offsite or in the cloud.
